They have Chia, we have Sabja! And to clear up any confusion: they are not quite the same thing. They almost look the same and both of these lovely little seeds swell up when a liquid is added. Chia is a seed known for its high anti-oxidant and omega 3 levels and comes from a desert plant that originally grows in Central America. Sabja seeds (also known as Tukmaria or Falooda seeds) are the seeds of the sweet basil plant and have traditionally been used in India (and other parts of Asia) for making falooda and other desserts and drinks and for treating certain health conditions such as digestive disorders, colds, respiratory problems. And this is where this recipe comes in: it has cooling properties. According to my Ayurvedic doctor drinking water with half a teaspoon of sabja seeds at night before bed is a simple home remedy to battle the heat of summer.
I do that but since it’s hot as hell out here, I also like to add them to shakes to make sure that the entire family stays cool and level headed ;). This particular shake takes full advantage of yet another pride and joy of Indian summer: the mango. It is deliciously cooling and refreshing and so thick and luscious that I recommend you eat it with a spoon. For breakfast or dessert or a quick snack for the kids. For those of you unfortunate folks (just kidding) who are not in India, go ahead and use your chia seeds instead or you might be able to find sabja seeds in your local Indian store. Meanwhile we will stay desi and enjoy the local fare!
