Does alcohol have any health benefits?

Alcohol has no known health benefits. In fact, its consumption has been associated with increased disease risk and mortality. These risks being influenced by factors such as quantity and bio-individuality.

Yet I choose to enjoy a drink on occasion. A glass of wine with a great dinner. Or a beer at home on a Friday night with my husband, kicking back, eating homemade tacos and watching a movie. Or during a holiday brunch with people I love.

Most of the time, however, I choose not to. I sleep better, think better, and function better without alcohol.

Alcohol consumption is a returning  topic of conversation with clients. Does alcohol fit into a healthy lifestyle? How much? What type of alcohol? How do you handle social events? Business dinners?

It’s all quite individual. But here’s my typical response:

  • Let’s look at where you are with regards to your health. Is the consumption of alcohol exacerbating a health issue? Are there imbalances that are impacting alcohol tolerance? What are your health goals?
  • Are you able to make a conscious choice to drink or not to drink? If there are any signs that alcohol is an addiction, or consumed for its effect, such as numbing or to cope better in social settings – you will need to assess and address these reasons – possibly with support.
  • Stop drinking for a period of time. It can be very insightful. Observe the impact it has on your health, sleep, energy, brain function, moods. Is saying no to alcohol easily accepted in your social circles? Do you face pressure or feel the need to give an excuse? Is it seriously testing your willpower or changing your social behavior?

Being on top of your health means having a strong awareness of your body and its unique requirements, your mind and behavioral patterns, your goals, and the benefits and/or risks of doing something. Only with such awareness will you be able to make the best decisions for your long-term health and wellbeing.

Be well.
