He sounded desperate: “I just can’t understand why I feel this way. My whole life I have always been on the go and extremely active. Recently I have been feeling tired, lethargic and worn out. I can barely make it out of bed in the morning, I need coffee to keep me going and I can’t make it through the day without an afternoon nap.”
For most of us, there are days when we feel energized and days when we are a bit more slow. It typically has to do with how well you slept, what’s been going on in your life, the weather, or your hormones.
Constantly feeling fatigued and low on energy on the other hand, the way my client described it, is not normal. When a drop in energy levels doesn’t resolve itself with a few days of self-care, you need to dig a bit deeper.
In my client’s case I did a deep dive into his health history and current symptoms, to better understand what could be contributing to his low energy levels. He had a history of Ulcerative Colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease, suffered from water retention, acid reflux as well as joint and muscle aches and pains and allergies. All of these symptoms pointed at inflammation, an imbalanced immune system, and a compromised gut.
Here’s what we did:
- We revamped his diet and took out all the foods that contributed to inflammation and replaced those with nutrient dense alternatives.
- Careful tracking of his diet and correlating it with symptoms revealed that he was intolerant to certain foods, so I helped him fine-tune his diet accordingly.
- We brought in special foods and some high-quality supplements to restore deficiencies and support gut healing and repair.
It didn’t take long for him to start feeling like himself again. 2 Weeks to be exact! The swelling, joint pains and leg cramps and acidity were gone as was his afternoon drowsiness. His energy levels were up, and he had dropped 4 ½ kilos in weight.
He had a remarkable quick recovery and truth be told; it isn’t always so easy to turn your energy levels around. There can be underlying causes that may need to be addressed, like hormone imbalances, mitochondrial issues or hidden gut infections.
Starting with the foundation (=core nutrition) is always a great place to start.
